Professional skiers get back to it after the Olympics

Friday, March 12th, 2010

The cool down period for skiers and snowboarders who participated in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver is over. They are hitting the slopes all over the Northern Hemisphere and making the most of the final month of snow on the slopes of the Alps, Dolomites and also in North America.

The Men’s World Cup skiing is underway and Swiss Carlo Janka has won the World Cup finals downhill beating a skier another skier from Switzerland and another from Austria. The Super G and the giant slalom will be competed for later this week and Janka has high hopes for himself.

If you are hitting the slopes of France or Austria this month, then be sure to have packed all of the necessary essentials for your trip. You need to make sure that you have your Quiksilver or Roxy snow jacket and snow pants packed as well as your snow polar, thermals and Quiksilver hat to keep yourself warm whilst you are cruising down the slopes. Although you might not be going as fast as the professional it would be worth your while having a snow helmet on whilst you are enjoying the snow. It can protect you from sustaining any serious head injuries should you fall whilst you are skiing or snowboarding.

Italians win their only gold

Monday, March 1st, 2010

After a gruelling competition between the male skiers at the Olympic Games in Vancouver this Winter, Italy have managed to come away with a medal in the men’s slalom. Bode Miller was expected to come out on top in this event but it wasn’t meant to be and Italy managed to sneak in and get their hands on a medal.

The men’s slalom was the last on the alpine ski events of the Winter Olympic Games and the conditions on the mountain were not great for the competition. Before the race began, the officials were forced to put chemicals onto the snow so that there was a hard surface for the skiers to ski on. Whistler has been blessed with a lot of snow over the last few days, but on Saturday, the snow had turned wet and it wasn’t the best conditions for the men’s slalom.

Giuliano Razzoli clinched the gold medal after a perfect run which saw him get the fastest time overall. It was the only gold medal that Italy won at this Winter Olympic Games. Italy has previously had a famous alpine skier, Tomba. Alberto Tomba is a skiing legend in Italy for his efforts at the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary and Albertville respectively.

Bode Miller doesn’t grab fourth medal

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Bode Miller of the USA was hoping to clinch another medal at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver on Saturday in the men’s slalom. Miller, who has had a very successful campaign at this Olympic Games by winning gold in the super combined, silver in the super G and bronze in the downhill. He was hoping to add to his collection and be the first man to win four alpine medals in the same Olympic Games by winning the men’s slalom.

However it wasn’t meant to be. Only eight seconds into his run down the mount, Miller straddled one of the gates which is an automatic disqualification. Miller seemed really surprised and shocked that he had made such an error. He shouldn’t be too disheartened though; winning three Olympic medals in one Olympic Games is very impressive and is a record performance for an American skier.

Slalom skiing is one of the most enjoyable skiing sports to watch and participate in. Watching skiers weave and dodge the gates that have been strategically placed along the course. All the participants in the men’s and women’s slalom during the Olympics could be seen wearing a snow helmet. All of the major snow wear manufacturers including Roxy and Quiksilver have their own range of snow helmets to protect yourself with.

Canadians not having much luck winning medals

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

The Canadians are really not having much luck in the medal race at the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. The host nation was hoping to get their hands on a few of the gold, silver and bronze medals that on offer but as far as skiing and snowboarding has gone, Canada have fallen short of their goal but they are persevering.

Canadian Chris Del Bosco was one of their hopeful medal winner in the men’s downhill ski cross which took place on Sunday. Chris performed well during the first stages of the competition but crashed out during the finals after skiing really well down the course. However, he became unstuck and failed to get his hands on the bronze medal he was fighting for. However, finishing fourth in an Olympic event is nothing to be sniffed at and Chris should be really proud of his achievements.

There are plenty of more skiing events to come over the coming week in Vancouver with the world’s best men and women competing hard so that they can be crowned the Olympic gold medallist of their chosen sport or event.

Americans impress at Winter Olympics

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

The Americans seem to be doing terribly well at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver and yesterday their main man when it comes to snowboarding was very impressive to watch as he cruised to victory.

Seth Wescott who was the defending Olympic gold champion wasn’t performing at his best in the opening rounds but managed to pull it together enough to get himself through to the snowboarding cross final at Cypress Mountain near Vancouver.

He had to compete against Canada’s Mike Robertson in order to get his hands on another Olympic gold medal and it looked like he wasn’t going to make it half way around the course. It was fellow American Nate Holland and Robertson who were battling it out for first place at the beginning of the final race. However, Holland lost his balance and crashed out of the race, leaving Wescott enough room to surge ahead and give Robertson a good run for his money.

It was clearly visible that all of the snowboarders in the snowboarding cross were taking all the necessary safety precautions by wearing the right snowboarding clothing as well as their snow helmets. If you are going snowboarding, Quiksilver has a great range of snow wear for you to choose from.
