In instances such as this, you can be skiing along quite happily before somebody wipes you out when you least expect it. This is why it is so important to wear a snow helmet when you are enjoying your winter holiday.

Skiing and snowboarding, although it might seem like a lot of fun, can be dangerous and many people have died as a result of head injuries after falling on the slope.

Snow helmets from Quiksilver and Roxy are designed and built to conform to regulation standards and will protect your head should you have a fall on the slopes. In most European ski resorts, it is a legal requirement for children under the age of 16 to wear a helmet whilst they are skiing or snowboarding. Ski & Snowboard Helmets Should Be Compulsory

Friday, November 27th, 2009

A recent report has concluded that nearly 60% of British skiers and snowboarders are still choosing not wear ski helmets, despite a much greater awareness of the danger and risk of head injury in recent years.

Latest research in Sweden and Canada has reported that serious head and spinal injuries are more common in recent years among skiers and snowboarders, mainly due to much faster speeds as well as the abundance of snowboard parks, and the daredevil jumps and acrobatics.  Research has found that snowboarders are between one and a half times and four times more likely to have accidents than skiers.

Men are more likely than women to be seriously injured, those under 35 years old are at higher risk of brian injury and that the most serious injuries usually happen to people not wearing a helmet.

Ski Equipment Hire outlets throughout the French Alps, have found that many people do not want to rent helmets even though customers are offered them for free. and time after time the offer of the free rental of the helmet is turned down and the customer puts the helmet to one side.

The British are among the worst for not wearing a helmet as most European skiers are far more likely to wear ski helmets, often bringing their own with them, or taking the offer of free ski helmet rental.

Helmets are essential in any sport where there is a possibility that the head may come into contact with a solid object and, without head protection, skiers are particularly vulnerable.  According to one source 44% of skiers currently wear a helmet and 42% are intending to wear one the next time they go skiing.  Out of 84,200 winter sports injuries recorded last season, 17,500 were head related.  It has been estimated that 7,700 of the injuries and 11 deaths could have been avoided if the person had been wearing a helmet.

The trend towards wearing helmets may increase this season now that fantastic new technology has given the helmet superior ventilation, made them lighter and totally comfortable, and consequently helmets are seen as less of a hindrance to skiing and snowboarding.  Many resorts make helmets mandatory for children and beginners.
