Sam Lamiroy wins the Quiksilver North East Open
Surfers village Global Surf News, 28 October, 2008 : - - Gale force winds, snow and below-zero temperatures made this event perhaps one of the most hard core professional surfing events ever! The North East Open is part of the Quiksilver and Roxy 3 Degrees Series. The event organized as part of the UK Pro surfing Tour was due to run in Tynemouth.
In search of the best available conditions, the surfers and organizers drove just about as far North and as about far East as you can go in mainland UK. This morning the event ran just south of John ‘o’ Groats at Keiss beach. Conditions were harsh at best and horrific at times. In between hail and snow squalls small clean waves were found and the surfers dived in regardless.
As the day progressed, better waves were reported at Sandside beach, so the surfers drove on in search of optimum conditions in which to surf their event. This time to a beach that is in fact located in the shadow of the Dounreay Nuclear Facility.
A great left hand break allowed the surfers to show off their best maneuvers to the judges. No spectators unrelated to the surfers braved the elements! Except for perhaps the odd seal, few people would have known that the best surfers in the UK were fighting it out for the £2000 prize and vital points up for grabs as part of the UK Pro Surfing Tour.
Eventual winner, Sam Lamiroy took the title and beat the other finalists in what was to be a tough day in the office. The winner’s cheque and the points will always make a bad day good. Runner up in second place was Quiksilver Welshman Nathan Phillips, and not quite finding the required waves despite earlier great performances were Warren Tuck from South Africa in third and his countryman Mike Young in Fourth.
The King of Water Sports award for the highest wave score was awarded to the Australian Jye Goffton for a 9.77 ride. Britain’s best male and female surfers remain in the far North of Scotland to compete again in the Quiksilver and Roxy Scottish Challenge. The tour will then be moving onto Northern Ireland for the Quiksilver and Roxy Portrush Open.
Despite the wind and the harsh elements the surfers and organisers will be ready in the spirit of adventure to face the conditions again for the upcoming contests. Next year the events could be more aptly renamed, The Quiksilver and Roxy ‘minus’ three degrees series. One thing is for sure; surfing in the snow definitely pushes the limits of professional surfing!

An international field turned out for the Quiksilver North East Open. This was part of the Quiksilver and Roxy 3 degrees Series, which takes the top men and women in Britain around the far corners of the UK. Venues for the UK Pro Surf Tour events are Tynemouth in North East England, Thurso in Scotland and Portrush in Northern Ireland.

The men’s event started with an expression session, with Jayce Robinson taking the prize, but couldn’t be completed due to small waves. The event will be finalised up on the North Shore of Scotland. Lack of waves will not be a problem for the Scottish event, but finding shelter may be more difficult. The surfers have made the drive North and will now have to tough out the cold windy weather just miles from the most Northerly Point of mainland Britain.

The final of the women’s event featured surfers from the UK and Australia. The eventual winner was French surfer Caroline Peret. Caroline impressed the strong crowd, which lined the beach in the wintry sunshine even though conditions were smaller than the ladies had hoped for.

The event was also part of the xperience08, a local extreme sports event that drew large crowds on what was to be a busy sunny weekend. The entertainment continued into the night as surf films were shown and a party rocked till the early hours. Locally produced surf film ‘Rise’ and Quiksilver produced Clay Marzo documentary ‘Just Add Water’ showed local groms exactly what they have to do to surf like the best.

Spencer Hargraves, Quiksilver Team Manger commented, “I would like to thank the local surfers for putting on a great party on the Saturday night which was awesome, supported by the helpful staff at the Park Hotel. Also the local council were truly supportive with stewarding and making this event happen !”

2008 PWA World Tour in Sylt Germany

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

This week saw the climax of the 2008 PWA World Tour in Sylt (Germany), where the Spanish windsurfer Daida Moreno was once again crowned champion, narrowly edging out her sister Iballa by a mere 33 points in the final rankings of the wave category. Having won last year’s freestyle title, the most decorated name in women’s boardsports showed her versatility in winning her 7th world wave title.
For the last stage of the season, the windsurfers had to content with extremely tough conditions. Due to the harsh weather, the women’s event could not be completed, and the Spanish twins had to settle for a share of first place. In doing so, they confirmed their dominance on the PWA World Tour, where they have reigned for over a decade.

In the past 10 years, the Moreno sisters, long time Roxy representatives, have revolutionized windsurfing as a sport. They are recognized as the queens of the discipline and have built a solid title record throughout the years. The “chicas” hail from Pozo Izquierdo in the Canaries, European windsurfing Mecca. It is how they have naturally grown to windsurfing on the islands since 1995. They dominate the sport since.

Costa Da Caparica, Portugal
11 - 19 October 2008

New Zealand Surfing Team Depart to Worlds
Surfersvillage Global Surf News
, 7 October, 2008 : - - The Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team departs for the 2008 ISA World Surfing Games to be held at Costa Da Caparica, Portugal tonight (7th October).  The prestigious biennial event known as the Olympics of surfing takes place from the 11th - 19th of October and the ten-strong team of New Zealand surfers are ready for action.
This is the first time since 2002 that New Zealand has sent a full team of surfers to the event.  Furthermore the team that departs tonight is as strong as New Zealand has ever fielded.  This bodes well for a good result at the nine-day event.

“The team this year has a great look about it.  The team is strong across all divisions with each of the surfers having excelled at their respective domestic surfing events here in New Zealand” commented National Selector Ben Kennings “The New Zealand team finished 13th in 2004 and 12th in 2006.  On both occasions the team was not at full capacity so coming into this event we expect the New Zealand team to climb the ratings significantly”

Team manager Dave van Staden is also upbeat about the prospects of the team “With a full team attending the event and the likes of Maz Quinn (Gis) and Luke Cederman available for the tour we are expecting to make an impact on the top nations such as Australia, USA, Hawaii and South Africa.  The team is strong across the board we can’t wait to get in the water over there and start competing” said a visibly amped van Staden.

The event kicks off with the Parade of Nations on the 11th of October and is followed by eight days of competition.  Approximately thirty nations will be competing at the event.  Australia are the defending champions.  In 2006 the event was won by South African surfer Jordy Smith.
The 2008 Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team is as follows:

Open Men
Maz Quinn (Gis)
Leon Santorik (Raglan)
Luke Cederman (Raglan)
Zennor Wernham (Raglan)

Open Women
Jessica Santorik (Raglan)
Daisy Thomas (Christchurch)

Men’s Longboard
Daryn Mcbride (Mount Maunganui)

Men’s Bodyboard

Au naturel woman

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Respect for the environment is becoming an important issue of everyday life…and should be at the forefront of our minds in particular, as the choices we make are affecting our natural playgrounds. Be it the beach, or the mountains, we owe it to ourselves to respect and carefully preserve the environment in which we live and play.

Many of the pesticides used in cotton production are hazardous by design – these are chemicals manufactured with the aim of killing, repelling or inhibiting the growth of living organisms. In many cases, pesticides not only affect the physiology of the pest species they are intended to control but also impact upon the well-being of humans and our environment.

That’s why many Quiksilver clothes in new Quiksilver for women range are made with 100% organic cottons and use methods that have a low impact on our environment. THINK GREEN. CHOOSE ORGANIC.

Score extra green points and hand wash your new environmentally friendly Quiksilver clothing and then hang dry.
