Day 17 : onboard Roxy in the Vendée Globe - DIY day

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Hello everybody!

Yesterday finished with a “boy shower” up on the bow of ROXY! This time there was plenty of water to rinse my hair. When there is a free, continuous warm(ish) shower going on 24/7, you might as well make the most of it. As I said, every cloud has a silver lining and now it smells of roses onboard Roxy!

I am still pushing hard to try to stay in front of Foncia for as long as possible… It’s pretty difficult though. Now the wind is starting to drop, I will see the others behind catching up a bit. Hopefully, at the same time I will gain on the leaders.

This morning I have been making the most of the quieter conditions to do some DIY. A few little bits and bobs to fix, and yet another big check around Roxy.

Now I am absolutely STARVING hungry for once, so I am going to have a pause from my jobs and eat a big lunch. On the menu today: Sodebo bread, cheese, marmite, pistachios, some sardines perhaps, and an orange to finish off with!

Day 16 onboard Roxy in the Vendée Globe - It is raining flying fish

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Hello everybody!

Nothing has changed here! Still living at 20° angle, on a bumpy ride south.

Yesterday I attempted to fix the small diesel leaks, so we will see if it works or not. It is not the easiest job - under the cockpit, trying not to bump my head or back on the coffee grinder system and sliding around due to oil then diesel; it is like an ice rink. Trying to keep still enough to sand, clean and then fill the joints…. I came out after my repair looking like a caveman (or cavewoman)!

As you can imagine, the sailing at the moment is not the most fun. With unstable winds yesterday, I had everything from 6 to 26 knots of wind. Trying to keep Roxy going fast without putting too much strain on anything is quite a full-time job at the moment and it is difficult to get enough rest.

Yesterday morning I was treated to a cockpit that looked like a murder scene! An enourmous flying fish had nosedived into the boat and alongside that, I had missed a little when I had thrown the rest of my lasagna over the side! Luckily, now, we are in “washing machine mode” all of that has been quickly washed away by the buckets and buckets of (still warm) seawater that come cascading over the boat.

Day 15 onboard Roxy in the Vendée Globe – Hitting the slopes, so to speak

“Hello everyone,

Now Roxy and I, like the rest of the fleet, are bouncing along upwind in the South Atlantic Ocean trade winds. Life is now all at a 30 degree angle, on port tack, meaning that my right leg will soon be longer than my left one. It is pretty bumpy too, which makes it feel like you are driving off-road 24 hours a day. Any movement requires care, and I have been likening this to my skiing trips in Avoriaz, when I frequently find myself prostrate across a steep incline! The top tip is to remember what Bruno says: “bend the knees”, “stand across the slope” and “always keep the weight on the downhill ski”. It seems to work here too!

The wind is fairly stable, and the angle means that there is relatively little to be done to keep Roxy going fast - a few changes of sail trim, and occasionally a change from Solent to staysail or vice versa. This has meant that I can catch up on some sleep and rest. I have also done some more weather study, and I organised my i-tunes a bit better!

The delights of having a sea view never end, and yesterday evening I was treated to another delightful sunset, which I can see directly from my bed out of my starboard porthole. At night the sun has been replaced by a particularly bright star, or maybe it’s a planet? I am ashamed of my lack of knowledge of the constellations. Maybe someone can help me?

Last night my thoughts went to Jeremy, who is struggling to get Delta Dore to shelter where he can try to repair his mast. It is not fair, he certainly doesn’t deserve this problem. I so hope he makes it safely to the coast, and wish him all the luck and courage for his repair, which I know will not be easy.”

Day 13 ; Hello from the Southern Hemisphere!

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Well today’s big news is that the water goes the wrong way round when it goes down the plughole!!! If I had a plughole….

Roxy and I crossed the equator at 14h53 today.

I offered my traditional Champagne GH Mumm and chocolate - this time in the form of a bar (minus 2 squares for me) of Cadbury’s Caramel.

Also Neptune received the bunch of flowers that Miranda and Alex had given me at the start.

After the celebrations were over, I was busy trimming the sails, and I hadn’t noticed that Lucky and Foxy (my lucky duck and his flamingo girlfriend) had pinched the rest of the champagne and were finishing it off.

They weren’t feeling too good, being in the wrong hemisphere and all that…. so anyway, they decided that they would be better off the right way up!!!

Thankfully, the champagne has worn off and I have managed to persuade them back to their home at the chart table where I can keep an eye on them!

Day 12 : Through the Doldrums, next stop the Equator

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Hello everyone,

Well, the Doldrums were very kind to us this year! Our little group of boats (Temenos, Pindar, Roxy and Safran) managed to slip through without really slowing down. Now we are careening along upwind in the SE trade winds, just north of the Equator.

The reason that we had no “doldrums” was because I wanted a light patch of wind to re-do a lashing at the top of my mainsail. This meant dropping the sail, working at radar-height in my climbing harness, and then re-hoisting the sail.

Unfortunately I ended up doing it in 16 knots of wind, which was a little challenging, but totally do-able. The good thing was that the re-hoist was easier as I went to one reef. With just the solent up, we actually didn’t slow down too much either.

So, now it is an upwind ride for a while, where I struggle to keep up with these new powerful boats. I will be trying as hard as I can to keep Roxy at 110% all the time!

Tomorrow I will cross the Equator, so I shall make my offering to Neptune (he gets GH Mumm champagne and chocolate from me) to thank him for looking after us so far and to negotiate good winds for the rest of the trip!

Sam gets her Roxy Bikini out

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

Hello everyone!

At last the sun is really shining so I have got my Roxy bikini out!! The trouble is I’m a bit white so I’m piling on the sun cream to protect my skin, and trying to stay in the shade.

Last night I slept a LOT! In fact, I forgot to set the sound part of my alarm clock, so instead of a one hour sleep, I woke up five hours later, feeling a bit lost and confused, but extremely refreshed!

The reason I slept so well was also that Roxy was slipping along so nicely under spinnaker that her gentle purring helped me sleep. If ever she slows down or something changes, I wake up by the change of noise or motion.

This time, the wake up was due to the wind lifting us; Roxy was saying she was no longer happy and perhaps this was a good opportunity to get further west. I agreed, so we gybed across, passing in front of the little red and green navigation lights of Pindar.

Now, back on Port gybe and heading directly into the Doldrums, we are still slipping along nicely under the beautiful Roxy spinnaker.

Day 8 onboard Roxy in the Vendée Globe

‘Sam and the Mouldy Orange - on board Roxy in Vendee Globe 2008′ Sam Davies

‘Hello!

Today has been a busy day onboard Roxy.
In the early hours, the wind came aft enough to need the spinnaker. I waited to check it wasn’t a momentary shift, and then went to change from gennaker to spinnaker.
Unfortunately, the wind decided to play games today. After a couple of hours of great spinnaker running, the wind increased . . . . turned . . . . and that wasn’t it! In total, here are the sail combinations used today: (in the order of changes)

Gennaker + full main
Spinnaker + full main
Spinnaker + 1 reef
Solent + 1 reef
Solent + full main
Gennaker + full main . . .

And the day is not even over yet! I have a feeling another couple of changes will be needed, especially as the Cape Verde Islands will probably change the wind all over the place!
So, as you can imagine, I am quite tired. Luckily, all the physical training with Bernard (my personal coach) is paying off, and I still have enough energy to keep going.

Roxy is hooning along as usual, determined not to let Temenos get past!!
In between changes, I have managed to eat my lunch. Today was a carrot and orange fest, as I discovered that some of my oranges really needed eating (and some were even beyond that stage)
