Oakley Pro Junior Brazil Championships

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Junior surfing championship competitions are really coming into their own, with these young riders being more gutsy and daring every day. Their commitment and enthusiasm for the sport is second to none, and they bring with them a fantastic supporting crowd and an exhilarating atmosphere.

The fourth leg of the Oakley Pro Junior Global Challenge saw some incredibly strong waves and impressive moves at the Oakley Pro Junior Brazil Championships. With some of the greatest junior surfing in South America being displayed, this competition was proving to be one of the hottest yet.

Last year’s finalist Jadson Andre wasn’t going to give up his title easily, with spectacular high scores throughout the event, he set the standard for the day in terms of the quality of surfing required. Jadson stormed through the first semi final to beat fellow surfer and friend Miguel Pupo into the finals. The other semi final saw Alejo Muniz and Jesse Mendes battle it out in almost like for like display of perfect waves. Muniz just took it and went on to challenge Andre in one of the tightest Pro Junior finals yet. With both surfers showing the incredible standard of young surfers now coming out of Brazil, this was a close competition. Both competitors were neck and neck most of the way, however it was Muniz, cheered on by adoring fans, friends and family, who eventually took the title.

Red Bull Riders Cup Season - Huntington Beach take regional title

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

With the Red Bull Riders Cup Season in full swing, the Orange County Regional Championships became the seventh stop on this exciting tour. This heat in the competition saw all of the best high school surfing teams in Orange County compete against each other in what were arguably, not the most fortunate of conditions. With the reigning champions, St Clements High, being knocked out in the earlier qualifiers, the competition was on to see who was going to become the new champion of the regions.

As the finals neared, it soon became apparent that the two to watch were Huntington Beach and Newport Harbour. With Huntington already defeating last year’s winners and winning the coin toss, they were looking like the clear favourite. Huntington chose for Newport Harbour to ride first which appeared to be a good move. Chase Wilson did well for Newport with a 6.5 score in the first leg, giving them a respectable total points tally of 19 for the first round. Huntington quickly racked up 15 points, and still with eight minutes to go, it looked like a sure win for them. However with only small waves of two to three foot maximum to contend with, Huntington could not quite make it and ended up trailing by half a point.

It was Newport to surf first again in the second section, and they stormed through with an impressive 25.5 points, showing Huntington that they were really going to have to pull out all the stops to claim the winning title. Despite some strong rides by Huntington, the waves were just not strong enough to achieve the 26 points they needed.

The end of this nail biting event saw Newport finishing with a 64 point total. Huntington tried their best to keep up and a strong last minute 6.5 score by Cristian Saenz brought them in with a fighting chance. Huntington could not find any strong enough waves to gain any more points, making Newport Harbour the regional winners for the first ever time. This is an exciting win for Newport, who have never really shown their true potential, but with the sheer hard work and determination in their training over the past year, them, along with their coach Ryan Simmons, should be very proud indeed.

Billabong Pro – Tahiti

Friday, May 29th, 2009

The third event of the ASP World Tour saw Ocean and Earth Surf Accessories team rider, Bobby Martinez from California, become the champion of the 2009 Billabong Pro in Tahiti.

This is Bobby’s second win at this event and he took this one with an almost perfect heat. His clean three-to-five foot waves gave him the highest total score of the event, an impressive 18.46 out of a possible 20. Bobby’s performance throughout the entire event was top class, with him showing us arguably the best ride of the contest on the opening day. The waves were not particularly strong at Teahupoo this year, but Bobby took his time and managed to ride a few good ones to bring him to victory.

Currently Martinez has no sponsor behind him and was also using borrowed equipment for a lot of the event, including the final heat, after many of his own boards were damaged in the waiting period.

Taj Burrow from West Australia came in behind Martinez, now putting him in second place in the ASP World Tour. Having not performed as well in Teahupoo over the past few years, this is a good result for Burrow and he is determined as ever. With seven events still to go, the lead in this competition could change at any time. This is definitely one to watch.

Saltrock Open 2009 delayed

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend saw the next event in the UK Pro Surf Championships, the Saltrock Open 2009. Originally scheduled to start on Friday the 23rd May, the event was delayed a day later, instead kicking off on Saturday 24th May. The reason for the delay was a slight shift in the forecast, which predicted a better swell to occur on the Saturday as opposed to the Friday.

The Saltrock Open brings some of the most outstanding contemporary surfing to North Devon, and attendance figures for both competitors and spectators were high this year.

As per previous years, Relentless Energy Drink once again supported the event by providing surfers with plenty of fluid to keep them going throughout the day. There was also a £250 prize for the biggest Ariel of the competition. A prize of a top quality skateboard was also awarded to the man and woman with the highest scoring waves of the event.

The day matched expectations set by the previous year’s outstanding turnout and performance.
The move also means that the official party at a local pub had to be moved from the Saturday night to the Sunday night to coincide with the day after the event.
