UK’s first competitor in Deaf Surf Championships

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Harry Hillier is the first person from the UK to compete in the World Deaf Surf Competition.

Harry is being kindly sponsored by Plymouth College of Art to participate in this event. Having just completed a Foundation Degree in Photography there, the college are no doubt really proud of Hillier and keen to back him all the way.

Part of the sponsorship deal will involve Harry’s surfboard displaying the new college logo, however Harry has funded the majority of this trip himself, which clearly shows his passion for the sport. Harry has been surfing since he was nine years old and has loved the sport ever since.
When he was eighteen he competed in the Deaf Olympics in Australia, where he found out about the Deaf Surfing Competition and decided he wanted to compete once he had finished his course.

The competition takes place in Honolulu in Hawaii and Harry, along with other fellow participants will fly out on the 2 July to meet each other, accustom themselves to the surroundings and get in as much practice as possible in preparation for the competition.

Harry’s main competition is thought to be the DeLao brothers from the USA who have won various levels in the competition over the past few years and will be there along with other surfers from around the world. The United Deaf Surfriders Association (USDSA) has hosted this event since 2001, with previous competitions being held in Japan and Australia.
